Pontiki

Pontiki Coal, LLC owns Pontiki, an underground mining complex located near the city of Inez in Martin County, Kentucky. We constructed the mine in 1977. Pontiki owns the mining complex and controls the reserves, and Excel Mining, LLC (Excel), an affiliate of Pontiki, conducts all mining operations. Our Pontiki operation utilizes continuous mining units employing room-and-pillar mining techniques to produce low-sulfur coal. Coal produced in 2008 remained low sulfur, but does not meet the compliance requirements of Phase II of the Federal Clean Air Act.

The preparation plant has a throughput capacity of 900 tons of raw coal an hour. Coal produced from the mine is shipped via Norfolk Southern railroad directly to customers or to various transloading facilities on the Ohio River for sale to customers capable of receiving barge deliveries, or by truck via U.S. and state highways directly to customers or to various docks on the Big Sandy River in Kentucky for shipment to customers capable of receiving barge deliveries.
